Frequently Asked Questions
Ridiculous names. Seriously good candles. Here’s what matters: what they smell like, what they’re made of, how to burn them, and what happens after you order. The secret sauce stays secret because we’re not completely feral.
What’s in the candle?
Enough chemistry to make it work. Not enough oversharing to ruin the mystery.
What kind of wax do you use?
We use a performance wax blend made with plant-based waxes and paraffin. It’s built for strong scent throw, steady burns, good wax stability, and a finished candle that behaves itself.
The recipe stays in the kitchen.
Do your candles contain paraffin?
Yep. Paraffin is part of the blend. It’s there because it does a job.
Wax, fragrance, wick, and vessel have to work together. We’re interested in the candle that comes out of that relationship, not winning a purity pageant.
Are your candles 100% soy?
No. Gooey Duck candles use a performance blend, not a 100% soy formula.
That’s on purpose. We want a candle that burns consistently and actually smells like something once it’s lit.
Why use a wax blend at all?
Because a candle is a system. Wax changes how fragrance releases, how the wick behaves, how the melt pool develops, and how the candle holds up.
We build around how the whole candle performs, not which wax word looks best in an Instagram caption.
Are your candles “clean”?
We make candles, not purity claims.
Our job is good scent and a solid burn. No wellness theater. No aromatherapy sermon. No pretending a candle needs a moral résumé.
Turns out a candle can smell great without owning a gratitude journal.
What kind of fragrance oils do you use?
We custom-blend fragrance oils into our own scent profiles so each candle has depth, balance, and a personality of its own.
The goal isn’t to rename one stock fragrance and slap a dirty joke on it. The joke is free. The scent has to do the work.
Are your candles heavily scented?
They’re built for noticeable hot throw. You should know the candle is lit without feeling like the room has taken you hostage.
Strong, balanced, and actually worth lighting. That’s the assignment.
What scents do you make?
The core troublemakers are:
- Big Wick Energy — Bourbon / Oak / Tobacco / Pepper
- Morning Wood — Cedar / Fir / Moss / Coffee
- Low Tide, High Standards — Sea Salt / Driftwood / Amber
- Shuck Around & Find Out — Pepper / Leather / Birch / Dark Rum
- Salty Little Secret — Grapefruit / Sage / Sea Salt / Musk
- Blowin’ Smoke — Campfire / Whiskey Barrel / Cedar / Clove
We also kick out seasonal and limited runs when the weather—and our judgment—starts acting up.
What candle formats are available?
Gooey Duck lives in four vessel formats:
- 1/2 Pint paint can
- 1 Pint paint can
- 1 Quart paint can
- 16 oz can glass
Same bad influence. Different levels of commitment.
How do you choose the wick setup?
We match and burn-test the wick setup to the vessel, wax, and fragrance. It’s not a flex. It’s part of making the candle burn right.
If the setup acts stupid, we change it.
Do they actually smell good, or are the names the whole thing?
That would be a pretty expensive joke.
The ridiculous name gets your attention. The scent has to earn the second burn. That’s the whole damn point.
Are Gooey Duck candles only for men?
No.
They’re for anybody who likes wood, smoke, leather, amber, coffee, salt air, citrus, darker scent profiles, inappropriate humor, or simply wants a candle with more personality than “Sunday Linen No. 4.”
Burn it like an adult.
Fire is fun. Fire also has rules.
How should I burn my candle the first time?
Give the first burn enough time for the melted wax to spread across most of the surface before putting it out.
That helps establish an even burn instead of digging a sad little wax cave down the middle.
How long can I burn a candle at once?
Keep it to 4 hours max per burn.
At some point everybody needs to cool off.
Should I trim the wick?
Yes. Knock off excess char or mushrooming before relighting.
A maintained wick keeps the flame under control and the candle doing what it was built to do.
Why is my flame too high or smoky?
A tall, flickering, or smoky flame is your cue to shut it down.
Extinguish the candle, let it cool completely, remove excess char from the wick, then relight. Don’t perform candle surgery while the thing is on fire.
Why does my candle look a little different from another one?
Wax has a personality. Temperature, cooling, and fragrance can all leave small differences in surface texture or appearance from one pour to another.
If the candle looks slightly different but burns like it should, congratulations: you have wax.
Why is there wax left at the bottom?
Stop burning when roughly 1/2 inch of wax remains.
That last bit isn’t a challenge. Leave it there.
Can I reuse the vessel?
Yep. Once it’s completely cool and properly cleaned, reuse it for small storage or whatever random crap currently lives loose in a drawer.
Don’t microwave the container, and don’t pour melted wax down the drain. Your plumber has enough going on.
Can I leave a candle burning when I leave the room?
No. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Keep it where you can see it and away from anything that would turn a nice evening into a call to the insurance company.
Are candles safe around pets and kids?
A burning candle is an open flame. Keep it out of reach of kids and pets, away from drafts and anything flammable, and on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
Gooey is reckless. You don’t have to be.
Will the scent fill the whole room?
Gooey Duck candles are built for noticeable hot throw. Room size, ceiling height, airflow, and the scent itself still affect how far it travels.
A bathroom and a vaulted great room are not the same job. Physics remains annoyingly employed.
Orders, gifts & other decisions.
Eventually somebody has to give us a credit card.
Are Gooey Duck candles good gifts?
Absolutely.
The name gets the reaction. The scent keeps it from becoming a one-joke gift. Perfect for somebody who likes good candles but has absolutely no interest in receiving another beige jar called “Tranquil Sunday.”
Can I send a candle directly as a gift?
Yep. Put their address in the shipping field at checkout.
Much better surprise than a group text that starts with “don’t be mad.”
What if my candle arrives damaged?
Take a couple clear photos of the damage and packaging, then contact us.
Broken glass and crushed cans are not part of the scent profile. We’ll help sort it out.
Do you accept returns?
Yep, when the order meets our return policy. The return and refund page has the boring rules.
If something arrived damaged, wrong, or looking like it lost a bar fight, contact us and we’ll help sort it out.
Where do you ship?
Shipping options and prices show up at checkout.
If Shopify lets you send it there, we’ll do our part.
Still have a question?
Fair. Ask it. We’ll give you a real answer without turning a candle question into a 14-paragraph brand manifesto.
